For over 20 years, Siggi Clavien supports the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The organisation works to advance cures and prevention methods for catastrophic pediatric diseases through research and treatment.
Siggi Clavien supports this charity because he believes that every child deserves treatment. This was also the view of the founder Danny Thomas. He believed that children should not be denied treatment based on religion, race, or the family’s ability to pay.
That is why the families never receive a bill from St. Jude for the treatment, housing, travel, and food. All the family should worry about is helping their child to get healthy.
St. Jude treats kids all over the world. The hospital also researches treatments and cures. Since the opening 50 years ago, some of the treatments invented at St. Jude assisted in boosting the childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to over 80%.
History
The founder of St. Jude’s Hospital is Danny Thomas. Over 70 years ago, he was a young entertainer with a baby on the way. It was not easy to get work, and his despair increased. He prayed to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes, and pledged:
Show me my way in life, and I will build you a shrine.
That prayer signified a crucial time. Soon after this prayer, Danny found work and eventually became a well-known star on radio, film, and television in his day. He used this fame to fulfill his vow and to impact the lives of thousands of families. He opened St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 1962 in Memphis, Tenn.
